Tenured Faculty Evaluation Procedures

The procedures below have been summarized from the AFT contract. Please refer to the AFT contract for legal conditions and obligations.

  • Tenured faculty are evaluated at least once every three academic years. Additional evaluations may be initiated by the dean.
  • A peer reviewer must be a tenured faculty member, preferably within the same discipline.
  • The selection of the Peer Reviewer shall be made by the appropriate administrator in consultation with the Department Chair/Coordinator from a list of three peers, chosen by the evaluee.
  • The Peer Review shall consist of an observation of a teaching situation (laboratory, lecture, online) for at least 50 minutes.
  • In the event a peer review cannot be met the management component may be doubled. (double-manager)
  • The evaluator will complete an evaluation form, including comments and the individual evaluation summary rating (and recommendations if applicable). This must be completed and submitted to the Faculty Evaluations office no later than three weeks prior to the end of the semester.
  • Management shall only be required to participate in every other cycle of the evaluation of tenured faculty. In the event a management component is not available, the peer score shall be counted twice. (double-peer)
  • The management component shall be a review of at least 50 minutes. The management score shall be submitted to the Faculty Evaluations Office no later than three weeks prior to the end of the semester.
  • Student Component: At the current time we are NOT evaluating every class section for all faculty. Full-time faculty have a student component in one of each of their preps. If the instructor is only teaching one prep, then two of that prep will have a student component.
  • New Preps DO NOT initiate an out of cycle evaluation for FULL TIME faculty.
  • Student components may be administered by a peer evaluator, manager, or designated classified staff member.
  • Evaluations may only occur between week 5 and week 12 of the semester.
  • Distance Ed classes have a student component that is set up electronically by the FEO. If required, peer evaluations of DE classes must be submitted on the ONLINE INSTRUCTOR EVALUATION FORM, and must be completed by a peer with online experience.
  • The Job Description for Full-Time Faculty may be found here.
